What page width is in fashion for contemporary web design right now?

Note: I am referring to FIXED width only. Not FLUID.

I appreciate that it’ll be too wide for older monitors but a lot of popular sites seem to be ignoring compliance. I’m not so much concerned with compliance as I am concerned with fashion. What width is in fashion for contemporary web design right now? Is a 1000 pixel fixed width alright for website?

I reckon building a website with 950 or 960 px page width. This way it shows up well with a 1024 px width screen. I appreciate many desktops and macs come with wider screens, but you also need to factor in the fact that net books and smart phones now have smaller screens. Fashion is about design, not width and you could easily add a theme or background in the margins of the main site that can make the site look very cool.

What is the best way to learn about Web Design & Digital Media?

Hi all, I would love to get into Web design & digital media and I was wondering what was the best way to learn how to use industry standard software such as: Dreamweaver, Flash & Photoshop in order for me to fulfill that interest?

I’m going to assume that when you say digital media you’re referring to creative content made on the computer. The best way to get into web design and digital media is to set a solid foundation.

For both, you will need to develop your design sense. This comes though exposure, experience, or study. I suggest that you take a basic class in graphic design through a continuing education program at a local college. This is better than sitting at home by yourself muddling through, because classmates and instructors will present new viewpoint, challenge your ideas, and provide dialogue. After the introduction with the graphic design class you can go into a web design class.

With web design it is ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL to start with a firm understanding of the basics. Learn how to script with HTML and CSS in a text editor first before creating websites in software like Dreamweaver, Frontpage, etc. Once you get the basics under your belt you will be able to wield the software in more powerful ways. You will also need Photoshop to create graphic assets for your websites.

Software depends on personal preference, clients, and employer, but the major software packages that you’ll do well to learn include, Photoshop (image manipulation and creation), Illustrator (illustrations), Indesign (print design), Flash (animation and interactive media), After Affect (motion graphics), or Premiere (video editing). For the technical and software side of the disciplines, again nothing beats a class, but there are plenty of resources online, on cds, as well as in books.

http://www.webmonkey.com is a great resource for web scripting. http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp is dense for a beginner but is more comprehensive.

If you have the money but you don’t have the time for class take a look at http://www.lynda.com/ for excellent tutorials that will get you up to speed easily and quickly.

For a beginner learning software I suggest not going online. Books are a cheap and great starting point, because they will provide you with structured learning. I recommend the Visual Quick Start series published by Peachpit Press. They will walk you through step by step with illustrations and lessons. Once you have gotten enough basics to start creating your first website O’Reilly publishes excellent references. Check out "Web Design in a Nutshell." If you’re feeling a bit artsy and want to learn about the larger context of the digital realm read "Digital Art" by Christiane Paul.

GOOD LUCK!!

I’m building a website that would need a content management system for articles and for uploaded photos under a user Admin, this is a dynamic website and no i don’t want to use joomla and drupal.

News: (id, articles, content) add, delete, edit
Photo: (id, photo, description) add, delete, edit

i really need help on this been trying to look for a good tutorial but i can’t get a grasp of it…

This is a huge project. You would need a very strong grasp of HTML / CSS / JavaScript as well as a server side language like PHP and a database like MySQL / SQLite / PostgreSQL.

Unless you have strong skills in all those things, then you should just use Joomla or Drupal.

Why not use something that is free, thoroughly tested and stable?

How do you design a website that is compatible with Linux Web Hosting?

I don’t know anything about web design. What programs are compatable with Linux Web Hosting? What would you recommend? Do you know about any good templates compatable with Linux Web Hosting?

it does not matter, K-Disk is spreading missinformation don’t listen to him.
Make a site and it’ll run on either.

What’s the difference between graphic design and web developing?

I need to know this because I want to persue a career in freelance web design. When finding clients, do you keep your clients permanently (if they like your work) or is it all part-time or shirt-term? Are there any people with experience who can help?

Graphic design is making graphics in general and is not limited to computers….graphic design entails marketing in the real world, advertisements, etc.

Web development is, of course, programming websites for different clients.
A large company may hire you to be a full time webmaster….meaning you work at updating their own webpage constantly….some webmasters are freelance and can either be hired to do a one time web design for a person or company, or may be hired to make periodic updates.

Freelance web designers generally have several clients at once and work at home or their own office.
If you are a full time webmaster for a company you will generally work at the office of the company, such as the headquarters, and your main focus is solely to update and maintain their company website. (of course on the side in your free time you can have part time clients!)

Hope this helps :)

what components are associated with online design and content management?

I am in the process of applying for job as assistant retail manager and part of the criteria is experience in online design and content management. Can someone in this trade give me tips on what components are associated with managing the design and content of online products. I would like to see if any of my transferable skills can be applied.
Mnay thanks

An exmple of an on line design and content management system would be WordPress.

I should imagine that the CMS system under discussion has been specifically set up for the retailer and allows customers to browse and order products on line.

Making changes to an existing system (adding prices or changing produce) should be no harder than uploading photos and making changes to a Facebook page.

Of course, without knowing the CMS system or your background, it would be hard to know whether you could do it but most 20 year olds would manage something like this without problems and most 50 year olds would struggle but could work it out if they needed to.

Does that help at all?

How do you use Photoshop to color Drawings?

Yeah i’m an all out artist in drawing stuff and various of video game things onto a piece of paper. Lately when i scan pictures i usually color them in paint which takes a very long time. I’ve rescently came across photoshop and i have NO CLUE how to use it. How do i use photoshop to color a drawing or sketch that i’ve made. If not then does any one know where theres a tutorial in shading, colors, highlights, and basics in coloring an image or drawing somewhere on the net?. Much thanks appreciated.

Adobe Photoshop is a complex program. First, I would like to say that Photoshop is used for altering photos. Adobe Illustrator is used for illustrations. If you want to paint, sketch, color, etc, you need Adobe Illustrator. You said that you have already bought the program, so you might as well learn how to use it. If you go to Adobe’s website or photoshop.com you educate yourself through tutorials there. As well as, there is the help button on the main tool bar. My advice, if you really want to learn how to use any of Adobe’s CS3 programs, like the one you have, take a class.
